Maggie Carey is a writer, director and the wife of Bill Hader. Hader is an SNL alum who is returning to host Saturday Night Live. 1. Carey Was an Over-Achiever Growing Up

Carey grew up in Boise, Idaho, and according to her:

I was in every AP class possible. I played a ton of sports. I was in student council. I was an all-American (soccer player).

She was also a lifeguard and went on to play Division I soccer in college. Later on, Carey became a member of New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade Improv Troupe. She also performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York and the Improv Olympics West in Los Angeles. Eventually she became a writer, director, and producer for projects including Funny or Die Presents … , The Jeannie Tate Show, and The To Do List.

2. She Has Two Daughters With Hader

Hader and Carey have two daughters together – Hannah Kathryn, born October 6, 2009, and Harper, born July 28, 2012. When Hader appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in 2010, he joked about his baby girl Hannah, saying:

When [Hannah Kathryn] poops herself that’s the funniest thing because she just gets like a total blank look on her face and fazes out. It’s the loudest noise.

Carey and Hader try to keep their home life as private as they can.

3. Carey Was a Big Reason that Hader Left SNL

Many fans were saddened when Bill Hader left Saturday Night Live and wondered why he exited the show. According to Biography.com, Carey was one of the big factors in Hader’s leaving.

Hader explained that his departure from SNL was partially due to moving his wife, Maggie Carey, and his two daughters to Los Angeles because of her growing success establishing a filmmaking career.

Hader talked about the reason for his exit to USA Today, saying:

The whole reason we’re moving to California is that we’re tired of being apart all the time. Doing SNL was a huge time commitment. You’d have weeks off and you’d have to go to L.A. It’s about rolling with the punches.

And, when it came to his leaving, Hader said:

The nature of SNL is that it’s so in-the-moment. I feel like I’m going to wake up in August and turn to my wife and say ‘Was I really on SNL?’ It went by so fast.

4. Hader And His Wife Came Together for the Movie The To Do List

Hader and Carey decided to come together in a working capacity as they joined forces for Carey’s movie The To Do List in 2013. USA Today writes:

They’ve partnered up on the big screen. She wrote and directed the summer comedy The To Do List, about precocious high school graduate Brandy (Aubrey Plaza) who lacks sexual experience, and is determined to add a few notches to her bedpost before going to college. And the film co-stars her husband as the goodhearted, if socially awkward, pool manager who happens to be Brandy’s boss.

Carey opened up to USA Today about the plot of the movie saying it was:

… About capturing the essence of when you’re young and you so badly want to know about something, and sex is the epitome of that. You’re so curious and you so badly want to know. It’s loosely inspired by things that happened to me.

5. Carey Was First Turned On by Bill Hader’s Overalls

When it comes to Hader and Carey, it was love at first overalls. Carey and Hader met in Los Angeles and Carey went to college “with a guy in his sketch group. They didn’t actually have a theater they were affiliated with – they put on shows in their friends’ backyard. In one of the sketches, Bill was wearing overalls and no shirt. “I’m from Idaho, and that’s a total turn-on. After the show, I was, ‘Who is that funny guy in the overalls?”
